Default Sturgeon Rods

I have my go to's, but its time to pick up a couple new rods.
Whats out there for new gear,? I fish anywhere from 3 feet from shore to as far as I can cast, so distance with a 4 to 6 ounce weight would be great.
I may pick up a couple reels as well, so again whats working for you fisher-people? Not sponsored by any particular company or any at all so I welcome all suggestions. Not high end, Im too hard on gear for 500 dollar rods and insane reels :also quite willing to try and break a sponsors rod if anyones listening

Not a budget set up but I run a Daiwa Proteus WN 8'10 MH rod and Shimano Talica 16II. The rod price isn't horrible but the reel is up there. For less than $500 I'd go with the Shimano technium sturgeon or the standard Proteus and a high capacity reel in the 600 size.

I got the wife an 8' MH ugly stick catfish rod 2 years ago for bank fishing the nsr....it gets the job done no problem. We typically throw 4-8oz and I can get it out there well over 100ft if needed. It's got a 4500 piscifun honor xt reel(the 3rd piscifun I've purchased). That complete setup with a spool of 50b braid would be under $150.

Wayne if you ever in Calgary check Decathlon store in Southcentre mall. They have great selection of of European carp rods, reels, and braided line. I got very nice set ( rod, reel and 50lb braid ) up for less than 200$. Handled 49 inch sturgeon with ease.

I tried out one of the ugly catfish rods. I wasnt happy with the guides, they arent strong enough for my fishing, and the rods are too light for a big fish in heavy current.
1 thing I like about my tiger rods is they are 2 piece, sometimes its a pain transporting 8 foot plus rods when I have to pack my gear a long ways

The one she uses is a 2 piece....and although we haven't caught a lot of real big sturgeon with it....it has caught a lot of nice fish both from shore and in a boat in heavy current. I run an 8'6" heavy rod and I'd say that catfish compares more to a heavy than a MH and my 125lb wife has no issues using the rod to her advantage.
It's a $60 rod lol....but have had no guide issues. It does get used in the boat for trolling big pike lures as well. Just an option.

At a reasonable price point - A surf casting rod designed for ocean shore fishing would be something worth consideration.

https://www.lamiglas.com/collections/insane-surf

XCC1265GH & XCC1267GH

The 12'6" USA-Made Certified Pro Kwik rods are powerhouse options for fishing sturgeon from shore, or to troll heavy gear for salmon. These rods have graphite/glass construction that keeps fish on but retains power. The XCC1267GH can cast 8 oz. very effectively and the capabilities of these rods are unmatched. With 12'6 of rod, just keep the pressure on and you'll have a great chance at landing the fish.

or for a little more money .... the Shimano Technium Sturgeon Casting Rod ... although the rod is much shorter and easier to pack

For my sturgeon rods, I’ve been using an ugly stick steelhead rod, the XH model. 9’, 2 piece. Casting 4-6 oz weights as far as you want, has a sensitive tip and good backbone. I’ve landed 200+ Dino’s, several in the 58-60” range and work great. I have 3, paired with Penn Squall 20 level wind bait casters, 50# braid. Big fan of that setup. And the rods are on sale for $79.99 at Cabelas.

Terry I would probably be your best advisor and probably has a closet full for you to break. I dont have his number but if you do.....
Another to reach out is Tyler Speed (fishslayer99) in here. Dont think he checks in here but is very active on Facebook and IG showing his 8 foot sturgeons he has been reeling in guiding. I am sure he could put you in the right direction especially since he fished with us out here.
