Default What is this bug ?

Doing some wood splitting, Aspen, tonight and this showed up. The split wood shows his handiwork.

Funny, that thought occurred to me. Nice juicy and plump.

We always called them grubs... not sure if that's a real name or not...

I think you'll find it's the larva (grub) of a Poplar Borer (Saperda calcarata). They live in this stage for 3-4 years before emerging as adult beetles.

Firewood I cut a couple years back had the same looking grubs in it. I just ignored them and kept cutting splitting and burning away. I figured it was some type of beetle.

I was gonna say an ash-borer. But poplar borer is probably more likely.

Fill a container with fine wood chips and then put the grubs/larvae in the container. Then go fishing. Any grub will make a great bait. Hook a grub thru the end with eyes. Could be a good bait source during winter when you're chopping wood.
