There should be pre drilled scop mount holes already on the firearm.

Most surplus 303 rifles are not drilled and tapped,so it can cost considerably more to mount a scope on those rifles.

What ever you do dont go with a Weaver mount for your 303, they are weak and problem prone.

You might want to consider the ergonomics of scope mounting a 303, the scopes mount so high that cheek weld is almost impossible, it often results more isomething like chin weld.

I'd go buy a Stevens 200 or Marlin XL and at least do it right, but to each his own.

A B Square no drill mount is close to $100 IIRC, and a cheek piece attachment
to raise your line of sight about $50.
You are already into $150 for the rifle.
Many Enfields are not really worth that much money, and their accuracy, although decent enough for hunting , does not warrant spending that much on a scope and mounting system, yet they are quite fine for irons shooting out to 150 yards or so.
That $150 could be put toward a newer rifle.
However, if I were going to do it properly, I would go with a ram line stock or a wood Parker Hale stock. These have a high comb for using a scope, however they are also more money, so you must be certain that your rifle is worth doing up - I would not do these mods unless the rifle could shoot 5 shots onto an inch 1 1/2" with irons at 100 yards.

Thanks everyone! The rifle was a freebee. and the scope was used but new; never mounted on anything but a few years old. my line of sight is, at best, 100 yards where i am hunting. the gun smith charged me $95.00 (pay up front) to mount the scope. i pick it up on monday.

Thanks again.. this is why i like this forum....

ECC,

I'd be very interested in seeing a picture of the scope mounted on the .303 when you get it back. If it's not too much trouble!

Sure... i should have it tomorrow evening.... we are supposed to get heavy rain and high winds here tomorrow. i may wait until wednesday to pick up the gun... the gunsmith sights the scope in with me there. i'm sure he or i would rather not do it in 50 km winds and rain
