Default DU land for training retriever

Hi everyone,
My 10 month old chocolate lab frank and I can’t wait for September to roll around and put everything we’ve been working on together. His training has gone great and things are looking good. Just need to get out somewhere to start doing some real world scenarios and wondering if I find ducks land without any grazing happening if I could use the land and water to do some training.

Thanks

I live in Calgary, my neibours are square and aren’t fond of shooting my shotgun in the suburbs lol

Check out the Wildrose hunting retriever club. http://www.wrhrc.com They have club land east of Balzac. While you can’t discharge a shotgun there you can use blank pistols and likely do whatever scenarios you have in mind. Minus the shotgun.

It’s a fairly active club with various events for members. PM me for more info if you like.

The annual hunt test is this weekend. Maybe that’s something you might be interested in checking out.

I try to avoid prime habitat this time of the year. Even if your dog doesn't actually grab a young bird, disturbing family groups can be fatal. Young birds are exposed to predators when flushed from cover or calling for the hen when separated. Even a sudden down pour can be the end for young upland birds that have been scattered from the family group or scared away from good shelter.

Yes I would stay out of the DU stuff for the same reasons above. It is there to help with nesting and producing ducks - and running your dog through it won't help that situation. I am not familiar with the Calgary area so I can't suggest a better spot unfortunately.

For what it’s worth the hunt test isn’t being held at the club property. It’s held on private land.

If you are around next week I’ll likely be out there to do some training.
