Default New laptop recommendations?

I need to buy a new laptop. Looking for recommendations on where to buy, and make? I am not interested in Mac. I don’t do gaming or programming. Simply use it for internet use, emails, MS Office, google docs, etc.

Anyone ever bought a refurbished laptop?

Depends on your budget, but I'd avoid laptops that aren't minimum Intel i5 Processors, Ram wise personally 8gbs should be the bare requirement as well.

Don't avoid gaming laptops if you find a good price, they usually have much better specs and even though you don't game everything else would be much smoother/faster.

Refurbished, open box, returns from Amazon and used from Kijiji, bought them all, never had any issues.
If they're well taken care of you shouldn't have any issues, and if a part goes bad, not too difficult to replace sometimes.

I got talked into buying a a Google Chrome book they are comparable to the Apple products but way cheaper to purchase. Plus it is the same computer that is in the school system for the kids. U don’t need any anti-virus either which is a plus.

Take a look at Dell. Last year I purchased a Dell desktop and it's been a great computer. 2 good friends purchased laptops from Dell last year and they're both nice machines (Inspiron series). My desktop is a gaming machine, but I use it for photo editing also. Very fast startup and operation, but it has some good specs.

Try and find something with at least 8GB ram, 16GB is better. And I would get a SSD, as I find the startup and operation noticeably faster than a mechanical drive.

My current machine is an HP laptop purchased 2-3 years ago. It's been good, but I think I would get a Dell again next time. If you do choose a Dell, they have coupon codes on their website, as well as sale prices on their items, if you wait a bit.

The Inspiron 5000 and 7000 series would be a good choice IMO, but depends on your budget and needs.

Kinda the like the chev/dodge/ford debate. I'ave ran lots of laptops over the years. I think a different brand every time. Compaqs, HP's, ect....Current one is a Lenovo. Seems fine, same as all the others.
Biggest thing is your processor, ram, and how big of a hard drive you need.
Check out Costco, only say that because of their warranty

Chromebook all the way. No need for anything else for what you do.

I would prefer a newer one simply because these things get old very fast. But for your purposes, any computer will do.

If you decide to go with an older laptop, I have a rugged Lenovo T60 which I can give to you for free or for a bottle of powder. I am in Calgary.

I would also recommend your wireless adapter supports both 2.4Gb and 5Gb wireless networks. My HP laptop only supports the older 2.4 technology and speed tests between it and other 5-enabled devices show a noticeable lack of speed.

I have always liked and had good luck with Dell stuff. Quality computers and really good customer service. The one brand I would definitely stay away from is Lenova. According to our I.T. guy at work they are really bad for coming loaded with spy ware and cookies.

I have been buying laptops from Memory Express, And I have done various brands, but the reason I buy from memory express is the extended warranty, if their shop can’t fix it they give you a new computer which by the time that it’s usually some sort of upgrade since model runs are measures in months. I have had a couple of laptops turn into bricks because of dead keyboards , laptops are the one thing I buy extended warrant on since they are so fragile. The first one I was screwed bought somewhere other than memory express the second one I took in and twenty minutes later walked out with a new laptop.

Check out Newegg on line. $150.00 for a rebuild chromebook. My Son (computer tech) highly reccomends.

You need to pick your priorities...

Do you want a big screen, lots of hard drive and a DVD? That is going to be heavy.

I always prioritize weight; I am going to be carrying this thing and don't want a 10lb monster. If I'm not carrying it, I'm using my desktop that has a much nicer screen than you can get on any notebook.

As for refurbished, there is refurbished and there is refurbished. If it is actually 'factory refurbished', they can be a good deal. But you will have to hold the seller's feet to fire to find out if it is actually factory refurbished or 'basement refurbished'. Typically a factory refurbished notebook will come with a 3 or 6 month warranty while the basement refurbished will come with a 1 month warranty.

Openbox is another place to check for used. I picked up a nice Toshiba Tecra R850 on Kijiji a few years ago at a good price.

Lenovo is my go-to brand.

I also use the Microsoft Surface, it works well for what I do, just pricey.

We have a smattering of Chromebooks in the house, and they are awesome for most productivity tasks. Kids use them for school etc. and are really happy with them - we paid less than $200 for each of them on sale (Acer).

I am not a fan of Macs - I hear how great they are for music and video, but find myself getting more done on my PC while I'm waiting for the Mac to find itself (or whatever it's doing while the rainbow wheel spins... Meh.)

Another vote for a Chromebook. As for brand it's pretty hit or miss just like any PC/laptop, (Lenovo/HP/Acer/etc.)
I've also had a Macbook and now have a new Macbook Air in the house. My family loves the Macbook Air (so do I when it comes to any desktop support because there is virtually none, and I don't need to deal with any of the nuances that come with Windows upgrades/updates), but once my laptop packs it in I'll be getting myself a Chromebook for browsing/emails.

I'm in the same boat as you OP, if you haven't bought yet, have you looked at any "All in ones'? I like the idea of a bigger screen and more power for the money, no laptop portability but my current laptop has sat in the same spot for 8 years so for me it is not a factor.

Those are definitely cool - and am considering that for IncrediGirl's next computer.

One thing to consider with the "all in ones" is upgradability - The model of iMac I have is one from a year where they made it all but impossible to upgrade RAM, HDD etc. Ugh!

Good point^ In the old days it seemed we were always adding RAM to the boxes and watched in sadness as the price of newer units came down. I paid $2500 for a Pentium 233mmx in 1996. This is what I'm most likely to get in the next day or 2 more than I need for sure but good bang for the buck.

When I retired in 2013 I had to turn in the company Dell Inspiron and bought an HP Envy (17 inch screen). Basically no problems but last year the left hinge broke so it's sort of coming apart at the back housing where the cooling fan is located. Did a Google search and found out that I'm not alone here. Read some pretty negative comments on lack of HP support so if/when this thing conks out I'll be looking for something other than HP.
