Hunter who fatally shot another after mistaking him for an elk sentenced to 7 months in jail

Mistakes like this are ALWAYS avoidable.

Hunting now for over 45 years.

Once many moons ago when I was young {17} I was partnered up with a so called experienced hunter friend of a family friend who needed prescription Glasses after wandering our separate ways for a few hours we then met again around noon, and were heading back towards camp when a black bear stood up about a hundred yards off He whipped his gun up exclaiming Moose I said whoa its not a moose its def a bear {Neither of us had a tag} He disagreed and shot anyway.
Long story short It was a bear! he'd taken his glasses of foggy or sweaty or some such excuse after finding the bear I said Bye went to camp told the family friend guy to take me to Athabasca where I called my father who came and got me never went hunting with him or his buddy's ever again.

If it were to happen Now He'd have a visit from F&W as well

Ya it’s a crappy accident that should never happen. Has anyone looked at a rock and thought that’s an animal? Has anyone looked at a deer and for a split second thought it was an elk? Making a split decision mistake is easy. It’s a good idea to always take the time for that second look.

I look at this as carelessness plain and simple. in my younger days I was in the Canadian airborne regiment. I had two friends Master Corporal Smith and Corporal Abel. when they were in Somalia on the ill-fated airborne mission Master Corporal Smith accidentally shot corporal Abel in the head, killing him instantly. they were cleaning their weapons after a patrol, and Smith had not unloaded his weapon. l know it seems like a total different scenario but both are complete carelessness that resulted in loss of life. There is no excuse. I never feel safe myself out hunting because there’s idiots like this out there. and when they make the fatal mistake it’s just a “terrible accident”. What a joke. Yes he’s going to feel regret the rest of his life, but at least he has a life.
