Default Liberia Costa Rica

Well wifey and I are booked and headed there end of November.

With an elk in the freezer, hope to help son with a moose, and daughter fill her deer tag... then on a plane.
I have researched abit on what's to do, just lookin for some hands on experience, say what to stay away from??
Looks to me a lot like a Mexico experience??

We have a condo booked, so will be out and about, shopping, getting some cultural experience.

We have traveled to Dominican, Mexico, etc so I'm thinking this will be close to the same ?? We are flying into Liberia.

If anyone has been, appreciate any info.

You could fish the carribean for tarpon and the pacific side for sails. I've only been to quepos, but enjoyed it immensely.

Go to tamarino its worth checking out if your in that area. Also go up to the arinal volcano rain forest area. Pretty crazy driving around some spots there but felt safe the entire time I was there.

My wife and two friends and I went there this past May for week and a half - also flew into Liberia, but didn't stay in that immediate area. Rented a vehicle for the trip and did what we wanted to.
We stayed on north side of Lake Arenal for the first part of the trip and really liked it there, but really depends what your into. We spent later part of trip by ocean by Montezuma.
Favourite parts - Tenorio Volcano, hot springs by Arenal, Montezuma and Santa Teresa, cloud forest.
Wish I had done but didn't - fishing (no one else was into that), surfing. Wish I hadn't done - some of the parks were a bit of waste of time and I think they were hyped up mostly to fleece tourists...

PM for more thoughts if you'd like

Check out Santa Rosa national Park. It's along the coast NW of Liberia. Lots of monkeys, exotic birds, and even saw a deer.

If you have a rental car and want direction to a private natural hot springs pool and swimming area p.m me. You have to pay a small fee for access but it was a stunning spot and my wife and I were the only ones there. About an hour from Liberia.

Wrong Liberia, he's not heading to Africa.

We spent 2 weeks there, quite enjoyed ourselves. We hired a local guide (Maleku Tours) to deal with driving and any local arrangements. They were awesome, well worth it.

You have to do the zipline at Monteverde, If I recall correctly it's 27 ziplines. The last is almost 1600 metres across, takes the weight of two people to get across, great way to see the rain forest.

The river tours are cool too, alligators, birds, monkeys and fish.

We went to up to at waterfall just outside of Liberia, forgot that it was Easter Sunday, hundreds of locals there too, we checked it out but left due to the over population, but felt safe the whole time. We are not night-lifers and we had our (then) two teenagers with us.

Tamarindo is a surfer town, lots of Americans there for the surfing and partying, the boys like learning to surf there.

Prices of restaurants and stuff in general is same as here.

We rented a car several times and it is very easy to drive there. Better than Mexico, but take lots of photo's of the car. The extra insurance was like $10 and every time we returned the car the person would find "damage". No extra expense to us but seemed shady.

Loved Costa Rica and will go back someday.

Pfft! Knowing Hayseed, his OP was just a sneaky way of asking where the nude beaches are.

I have a good chef buddy who I worked with in Chicago and Atlanta and has been a Remax Agent in Costa Rica for the last 10 years.

Worth a chat if you are in the area. He is a hilarious and good guy and a very straight shooter, no BS. Full of insight.

I would go to Tamarindo for sure and you can also do a night time tour to see the giant leatherback turtle lay eggs at night...a lot of waiting but a cool experience.

First of all Costa Rica is nothing like Mexico, Dominican...those places are both sh!t holes compared to Costa Rica.

When a country offers nothing but all inclusive resorts its because they want to stay at the resort. If you leave its to go to some crappy, fake tourist trap.

Its good that you are staying at a condo. Costa Rica is not the place to stay at at fancy resort. Rent a car and explore! So much to see and do.

People are super friendly and while some may be poor its clean, locals aren't dressed like street people and you don't get the sense of poverty like you do in Mexico, Dominican. Absolutely no begging anywhere.

People are honest, make sure you buy some fresh fruit from a local stand on the side of the road.

We were there for 2 1/2 weeks a couple years ago with the kids (9 and 11 at the time) Had a condo in Tamarindo and then stayed at the Arenal Obsevatory lodge. Flew in and out of Liberia

I don't know how long you're staying (a week or so?) don't try and see and do everything. There is so much to do you'll whip though places that you should take your time exploring thinking you need to get somewhere else.

Its a big country and while driving distances look reasonable enough (wake up drive a 100km) they're not, it is much more time consuming than you think.

The best part about Costa Rica is the wildlfe and the scenery. Howler monkeys waking you in the morning, seeing a sloth chilling out in a tree etc. Go to National Parks/reserves. Take some guided tours (hr boat ride on a river for example, hike though the rain forest, a volcano etc ) or explore by yourselves...its amazing.

We rented a 4x4 diesel Mitsubishi SUV, with a 5 spd. We followed road signs to a national park. Full blown off roading on our own through the thick rain forest. At one point we crossed two small creeks with water just below the rockers lol...it was awesome.

Be careful though. There are many poisonous, dangerous animals and enough deadly snakes to make you think twice about venturing too far off a marked trail.

I could go on and on. We'll be going back to soon to explore the south, what we missed last time.

The only negative would possibly be the food. Beans and rice with either chicken, pork or fish gets old after a few weeks

Well the day is finally here!!!!!
Officially done work, and we fly out tonight!!!!

So stoked, wife an I work a ton, so this is just going to be a fantastic trip!!

Had success with the moose for my son, and he took a bruiser of a WT as well.
Same as my daughter, she took a heck of a 5x5 WT as well, and for her second deer, needless to say she's a happy gal.

Appreciate all the info, can't wait for the adventure to begin.

Have fun. Jealous. I've been to Costa Rica 4 times and we stay in the Playa Conchal area. Dive out of Playa Flamingo.

LOVE Costa Rica. Liberia airport has been vastly improved.
