Horses being abused in Victoria
Now here is some left coast wow for us...
http://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/mo...oria-1.2826859
An animal rights organization is ramping up its campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in downtown Victoria.
The carriages, which have been a staple in the city for more than a century, are being called inhumane by the Victoria Horse Alliance.
The organization has launched a petition calling on the City of Victoria for an outright ban on the practice – citing city traffic, exhaust fumes, asphalt on horses’ hooves and metal bars in the animals’ mouths as big concerns.
“This is about addressing the cruelty concerns that we have with the horses, the pain and discomfort they operate in on the city streets every single day,” said alliance spokesman Jordan Reichert.

A city is no place for a horse.

My first reaction is that it was pretty far into the animal rights extreme.
However, "town" has changed to modern city - perhaps the environment is no longer reasonably safe to run horses.
I am quite interested to hear from folks with horse knowledge viewpoints.
(And it has nothing to do with politics or horrible world issues...)

I have no idea why you would bring politics or horrible world issues up in a thread about horses in Victoria, in compliance with forum rules I was asking you to provide background and your position on what you had posted.
One could be forgiven for thinking that your post was an attempt at trolling or deliberately bating.
As for the horses, the SPCA will investigate and write a report, I will wait to see that report along with veterinarian notes before I make any judgement. Now I'm off to bed mine down after this snow.
What type of horses do you have?

Went for a carriage ride ....
I was just in Victotia for a month .....stayed right downtown
In China Town . Carriage Depot was just across the street .
We went for a ride one evening , I couldn't help feeling
the driver was talking to that horse in a abusive manner ,
Kind of bullying . I noticed the animal had a bad cough
when I inquired about it , the driver said something about
some Benalyn later.
He was still better off there than Montreal where he can be
found in Loblaws under high protein .

Being a Canadian horse is high liability .

Screw the animals rights idjits!
Horses have been used on pavement and cobblestone before PETA was spawned of Satan himself, and the equine world got along just fine.
"Metal in their mouths"......
What a bunch of idjits . What's next, the Budweiser Clydesdales??!!

Interesting. I don't own any horses but very much appreciate them, and their utility from a historical perspective. Amazing animals for mankind.
Interesting link too. I believe ft McLeod bovre enterprises operates a large horse slaughter plant. It is a popular meat.

Yep they'll be next eventually. These types of "activists" don't really have any understanding of what they're protesting nor do they want to.

If it was up to these organizations we would all be living outside eating hay and animals living in the house eating man steaks. Such a joke and hopefully the penjalum starts swinging the other way.......soon. Let's all remember that they are horses and I own horses and treat them great but at the end of the day they are not humans.

Horse meat is an 80 million dollar a year industry in Canada. I hate seeing stock trucks of horses going to Bovre, but I would hate even more to see people just abandoning them out in the boonies like they do with cats and dogs. I wouldn't eat it, but I won't judge people that do, except the Japanese because they live ship them all the way to Japan.

what a crock and the horses probably couldn't be happier. Now if it were 20 horses left to starve to death I think they would have some grounds for their whining.

The horse on the other hand... A little long in the face !

Not meant as a derail but hot chicks on horses seem to be common. Not meant as a pun it just seems to be a fact. Same with hot chicks with guns

Haven't heard much about this guy in the popular media. Started out neglecting a bunch of cattle just down the road , years ago. Some people just won't learn.

Good old Gary Sparshu. He and his "nutritional advisor" Roy Birdsall got front page coverage in the Sun for the cattle episode.

One would assume that vets or inspectors regular check on the horses. If not they should. But if we accept that people walk around for 8 hours a day working downtown delivering things, I'm not sure why it's so inhumane for a horse to do so. Are they exposed to more or suffer more than a bike courier?

I'll guess the average age of those carriage horses in their late teens. Horses don't stay sound that long without quality care. 'Nuff said!!!

nothing wrong with it all things being equal-i've seen these horses, not a bad life if they have good sound respectful care.
we where at the eiffel tower and our family took a carriage ride, amazing as a horseman to see the voume of folks from all walks of life and cultures stopping to take the sight, sounds and spectacle of these horses in.
the carriage man was impressed me knowing his well kept cherished horses where "Brabants", an old foundational draft breed. 7 days a week with 3 teams that rotated in and out to turnout/pasture. horses get lot's of opportunity to just be-horses.
the carriage horse's in Rome and Florence-well that's a whole other story

um....Calgary Stampede Parade? Great time, great city...horses don't seem to mind.
New York police as well as carriages...no problem.
These people have too much time on their hands.

They haven't launched any campaign against the Budweiser Clydesdales but if you look on their site the don't like the use of them as "mascots". Wouldn't surprise me if these a**hats get a petition against Budweiser.
