Shell 10x Airmiles. Ripoff?

I've put quite a few hard miles on over the past few years and have gone out of my way to take advantage of Shell's 10x promotion.

Retail staff have repeatedly assured me that it's one mile for every $20 spent so long as you exceed 25l. The 10x is then applied. ie I put in 100l it should be 5 Airmiles then multiplied by 10, equaling 50. Nope.

I just checked our account out of curiosity and this deal hasn't seemed to have been honoured.

Hypothetically, I've spent enough to take my family on vacation. The Airmiles accumulated in no respect represent what should be there.

Shell's disclaimer is somewhat convoluted, but appears legit. Anyone able to provide a bit of insight? (YES, I called them but it isn't within business hours and I want to know NOW! Lol). Am I getting ripped off?

Offer valid August 31 to November 8, 2015 at participating Shell locations in Alberta only. Minimum 25L Shell fuel purchase required per transaction to earn the 10X (removed AIR MILES reward miles Bonus) offer. This Multiplier Offer applies in respect of the base reward miles offer of 1 Mile for every purchase of at least 15L of fuel. This offer can be combined with other Bonus promotions. No coupon required. AIR MILES® collector card must be swiped at time of qualifying purchase transaction.
Please allow up to six weeks post promotion for your Bonus reward miles to be awarded to your Collector account.

So 6 weeks after Nov 8th is when you should get the bonus miles.
Also it seems like it's saying "one mile for every PURCHASE (over 15 litres). Not one mile for every 15 litres.
So a 100 L fill gives you one mile X10 = 10 airmiles.
Seems strange the way they word that.

Yeah, I know. Strange indeed. Account shows anywhere from 1-9 miles per purchase depending on the station. Probably spent $25K or more there lately so if it's a fine print bait and switch I'm a gonna be chocked...

Any time I try to use Airmiles I'm always disappointed. From flights not available to hotels not available and then always having to pay taxes etc for flight rewards..they always annoy me.
I use my RBC Avion visa card for every purchase I make. Gas, food, dining, business sup plies. Probably well overy $100k per year. Their rewards have no blackouts, cover all taxes and I get enough for a trip to Vegas or vancouver every year.
My son gets huge airmiles though. He takes a medicine for Crohns that costs $4,000 every 3 mos . His blue cross covers 90% of that, but the total still counts towards airmiles. Gets the script filled at Safeway where it's 7x. So every 3 months he gets a purchase of $28,000 worth for airmiles.

You're right. No question. I have a CC but absolutely HATE to use it. Old school pay in cash principals are hard to overcome.

I know about the Safeway thing as my FIL is elderly, in poor health and currently in the Foothills yet again waging a difficult battle. Real sorry to hear about your boy. Crohns is awful.

Use your visa towards your morgage. Last time I did I was able to put an extra $1000 towards it.

My wife has Crohns also and yes it is a bad one 5 operations to date now. Hope your son dosen't have to have any.

I find its best to change to airmiles cash. That way you can use them in the stores. I believe it's 95 cash miles = $10 cash towards a purchase.

The only way to take advantage of the 10x AirMiles promotion is to fill in 25L increments. But who has time for that.

I have about 15,000 AirMiles don't know what to do with them.

You get 1 airmile for the gasoline purchase if it is over 15 l. not one mile for every 15 l. So, the 1 mile transaction is for your purchase of gas. The 9 miles is the 10x bonus - earn 10 for every one so when you earned the one you were entitled to 9 more.

Unless you are going to fill every 20 litres you really don't earn that many miles.

It always was for premium only, but since there was a problem with supply in Edmonton they extended it to all grades till Nov. for Alberta customers as an apology - that was the circular I got.

Takes awhile sometimes. Usually a few months after the promotion
they are awarded. just keep a eye on it.

IMHO, Safeway (pharmacy and grocery store) give the best bang for the buck on airmiles, especially with their regular offerings of 100 airmiles if you spend $100 (grocery and liquor stores). If you spend over $100 at Safeway grocery you also get a till receipt coupon for 7cents off/liter at Safeway gas bars.

I'm not a huge Safeway fan but it's either that or Save On in our town and use it in between Costco runs.

We turfed our Airmiles gold mastercard and replaced it with a WestJet World Elite mastercard. If you travel where WestJet flies this is an awesome card.

Since airmiles started tacking on $10 and $20 administrative fees for booking flights, vacations and hotels, they lost our loyalty. I'll only use it for merchandise or car rentals (until they add admin. fees for those...)

Shell is the best fuel but takes forever to rack up the airmiles. Even when I had a premium only car it still takers a long time and it's a poor dollar to mile ratio.

I shop at Safeway for certain items. When the right airmiles promos are running, I can get 5-600 airmiles by spending a little over a hundred dollars, versus 10 if you're lucky on a 70 dollar fill.

I got a free dyson vacuum last year. 600 dollar vac just for buying my **** tickets and cereals at safeway.

Problem is you pay 10-40% more for items at Safeway than say Superstore. From a cash in your pocket savings those miles are lost leaders that they make back in profit.
If you like the shopping experience better then you might as we use the air miles card at Safeway.

Just like if you have Any credit card it better be a cash back one.

Totally agree. I refuse to buy anything regular price at Safeway if I can help it, except milk, eggs, etc. Problem is, we're a bit landlocked in Canmore and only have a choice between Safeway and Save On (both of which are pricey). Other than that, we wait until we're going to Calgary for Costco or Superstore. However, like someone mentioned, you can spend just over 100 bucks at Safeway and walk out with nearly 500 Air Miles if you catch the promos.
