Fly Rods

Hey,

I've done some fly fishing over the years but havent been out in a long time. Any recommendations for a rod/reel combo to get started again?

I think we need to know what your budget is ,your location and where you are planing to fish before we can start to help.
I think Fon Anderson's "Finally" thread is keeping propel silent .
Or maybe the fact that the last guy to ask eventually did the right thing and went to the store and had a salesperson help him out and spent $200 over his otiginsl budget.

If no one else chimes in the best advice is to go to your local shop and have someone there give you a hand and you can hopefully try a few rods outside.

If they won't let you try a rod outside, they don't need your business that badly...just my two cents.

It's worth watching kijiji and the buy and sell on this site once you figure out what you need if on a budget. Many brands offer great warranties but personal preference comes into play as well. I own rods by TFO, Sage, and Echo and like them all. I started out (and have started out several other anglers) with 4-6 weight rods anywhere from 8'6'' to 9'' long with a floating line. Great for trout in streams, smaller rivers, and lakes. Stopping at fly shop is a great idea, hold lots of rods, ask questions and you should find something to fit your bill.

My only problem with used is most companies only warrente to the original owner so if you spend a bit of money and the rod breaks you could have problems getting it repaired. Some companies will charge more some will do nothing, it's something to think about with used rods.

Not being the original owner, I had no problem replacing the tip section of my Sage VT2 through Fist Tales. Minor fee of $50 and change and they shipped it out for you.

Dead on. I would NEVER buy a rod I hadn't at least spent 10 or 15 minutes with threaded up and casting in the parking lot. A rod's performance is so dependent on your casting style. It's like buying shoes without trying them on.

If you are looking for entry level stuff, Bass Pro has their annual fishing sale on right now. Lots of their house brand stuff is on sale. I went along with a couple buddies on the weekend to "supervise", and ended up buying a 10' 5wt Dog River... err, I mean White River. Less than a year into this game and that was rod number 5.

With your past experience maybe you will know, but for me it was hard to tell what I was looking for between setups as a novice last summer. Casting an Orvis Access vs a BVK, it was very hard to tell the difference. Though, I didn't cast them side by side and tested several days apart. Looking back, I think I was probably as much influenced by the line and environment/weather as anything to do with the rods themselves. That said, I could immediately tell the difference between the Orvis and an entry level Amundson I had bought. Maybe it was sheer "luck" that I liked the Orvis that much better, and had to return the much cheaper Amundson.
