Default Hunting the Lakeland Region WMU 514 for Trophy Whitetails

With so many excellent hunting opportunities in Alberta how do you pick one for your whitetail hunting adventure this season? One of the proven producers for trophy whitetail bucks in the province has always been right here in Alberta's Lakeland region, WMU 514. Located in the northern part of the Lakeland, 514 has the perfect mix of pristine boreal forest and agricultural farmland that grow huge whitetail bucks that most hunters only dream of. The area also has one of the longest seasons in the province starting with bow season in August and ending with rifle season in late November. This WMU offers the hunter a great chance at finding that trophy buck. The area just north of the City of Cold Lake along the Primrose Highway is a great spot to start your quest. With the many easy to access trails just off the road, hunters can hit many choice locations in the course of a day without the use of an ATV. The Medley River valley is one such spot that is perfect for rattling horns to bring in the big ones. Simply set up on one of the many ridges along the river that offer excellent views of the valley and deer can be rattled in from miles away. Your next spot should be the Tucker Lake area with the north side of the lake being your best bet. The area is a mix of grazing leases and pine forest that give the bucks the classic chocolate colored horns hunters long for. Rattling and calling work well in this area with smart hunters getting off the main trails to find success. The best chance for an Alberta monster in 514 has always been the Wolf Lake area. Due to the remoteness of the area, hunters will often have prime hunting all to themselves . The west side of Wolf Lake has always been a big deer mecca due to the logged out areas that have grown into prime deer habitat over the years. The many hills and valleys are excellent spots to set up a portable ground blind or tree stand to intercept deer traveling from bedding areas to feeding areas. It is not uncommon to see several animals in the course of a day so don't take the first one you see as the chances of a booner coming along are excellent. Remember to follow the Alberta hunting regulations for season dates and always ask permission on private land and for grazing lease access. Come to Alberta's Lakeland for that trophy whitetail buck of a lifetime.
