Default scope height.

Can anyone forsee any issues with a scope that is mounted that the front bell of the scope is just off the barrel by about 1 1/2 of a paper thickness. It definately does not touch the barrel (cold barrel). Will the barrel expand with shots fired. 338 win mag.

How much temperature change are you expecting? What is the barrel material, and what are the contour dimensions in relation to the scope orientation. If you want I can calculate the expansion for you. I do not believe this will be a problem as much as barrel distortion due to harmonics. By saying 1.5 paper widths are you saying 0.006"?

Aside from the fact already mentioned about barrel flex, when you close your eyes and put the gun up then open them the scope should be centred right in your eye - If you have to move your head even a little to get the proper sight picture the scope is too low.

Or, I would think in most cases, the stock is to low. The only reason the stock would be to low is because your cheek isn't high enough. Both my wife and myself need to lift the stock to get it to fit to get that proper sight picture like catnthehat is talking about.

As to your question, that close would be a little to close for me. But again, is the scope positioned properly? Can it be moved forward at all so the bell of the scope clears the taper of the barrel any better or does that throw your sight picture out of wack?
Getting the scope mounted on the rifle is the easy part. Fitting it to you is the fun part.

I think with the scope being that close to the barrel the chances of having too low a comb as opposed to too high are pretty remote, but yes the comb could be too low as well as too high.
As far as moving the scope back and forth the same condition applies, if you have to move your head at all the scope is not set up properly for sure.

Default the fix...I hope

well after hearing from you all...I decided that I would go to the next highest ring size. Signature Burris with the inserts. I had on the mediums with the +20 minutes of angle in both the front and back, but still only managed the 1 and 1/2 paper hight clearance. Went and bought the High Burris rings and ran the - 20 minutes in the bottom and tht gave me between 3/32 and 1/8th of clearance. Some positive notes...front scope cover will now fit back on properly. Maintained the distance I had pulled the scope back, and lastly...the high rings seem to work with the cheek weld a little better. The true test will be at the range I guess.

Thanks to all that gave insite, pointers and advice. Great wealth of knowledge and experience to be found on here.
