Anyone own a Savage Model 25 Walking Varminter?
Got mine in the mail yesterday and just have a question about the stock.

Top of the stock, about 1" forward of the recoil pad, there is a square hole cut out of the stock, approx 1/2" x 1/2". Black polymer beneath it, I gather backing for the recoil pad or part of it. Emailed the store and have been advised this hole in the stock is normal, some kind of tab lock for the recoil pad. Not doubting the store, just seems strange to me and was wondering if someone else that owns one could verify there's has it too. At work, but can post a pic later. Basically just a squate hole cut out of the top of the stock.

Be careful with the bolt handle. They are cheap and the thread will strip out on it. I ended up building my own at work with a straight throw for coyote hunting in winter, with big gloves(fingerless)[IMG] [/IMG]

Your Dad's is the Lightweight Varminter, I also have that one in .204 Ruger, laminate stock but mine doesn't have the Thumb hole.

It really doesn't LOOK right. I emailed pics last night to the store, smaller shop back east, and he said he had a look at another in stock and it was the same. It's the newer camo stocked version but the only reason I can think of is maybe they were having issues with the recoil pad and this is a fix of some sort. Think I may also go straight to the source and send Savage an email with pictures.

If I understand what you have described, yes it’s on the one I own.
I believe it’s only a hole if it’s open.
Not an expert on this type of stock but I would not mess with it.

That is the SIH or "suck insertion hole".....all savages have one . That's why it is square and not round....they got that wrong too
Sorry man I had to!

That's where you're wrong my wrong handed friend. It's called the AIH, or Accuracy Insertion Hole.

Just talked to a buddy who had one of these in black in 17 Hornet. He says it is indeed a tab lock for the recoil pad. He said it sounds to him like either 1) the tab has been broken off, or 2) the tab is stuck inside and hasn't popped up.
I'm going to fire these pics off to Savage and see what they say. If this is the way it's supposed to be I'm fine with it but something tells me something might be funky with the tab.

That looks terrible, that can't be right and if it is I would be sending it back.

To remove the pad, you screw out the sling swivel stud, and then push a flat screwdiver into that square hole, just enough to bend the tab away, then pull the recoil pad out of the end of the stock. Axis is the same.

Yours looks like someone may have pushed too hard and broke the tab off. Take it apart and have a look.

I don't want to start monkeying with it quite yet. Then they could accuse me of breaking it. It's new, right out of the box now, so it either came from the factory this way or it happened in the store before it was shipped. I emailed Savage customer service, along with pictures attached, so will see what they say.

I was out shooting my 204 today and there is a square hole in the top of the stock. My apologies. Never noticed it before

No worries. I had a look at one at Cabela's on the week-end, so was able to check it out up close and personal. What was noticeable was the hole did hold a tab, and was barely inset. On mine, there's no apparent tab. I don't want to start pulling it apart until I hear back from the store or from Savage, but want to unscrew the swivel stud and see if the recoil pad is missing the tab on this backing insert, or if maybe it just is offset and isn't popped out like it's supposed to be.

To O.P.
So how does the '25 fit you? Is the stock the correct length, or do you need to shorten it? If so, you don't need to worry about that little ol' hole because you may not need it anymore. Shortening that stock would require a grind-to-fit replacement pad. Just asking because some Savage stocks seem (to me) to keep my eyeball a little too far from the scope. Something to do with the location of the base mounting screws. But that's just me, if it fits you, great.
