Default .17 hmr vs .22 mag on coyotes

Hi I was wondering what would be better for shooting coyotes, a 17hmr or .22 mag. Thanks

I would say either one will work about the same. However I personally wouldn't recommend it. They both defiantly fit into the category of how small can I go and still have it work. 222,223,204,22-250, etc. would all be a far better choice if you were asking me.

As for getting more than just my opinion check out these threads:

17HRM on Yotes

22WMR on Yotes

Hi there, funny, just shot 4 coyotes with a .22mag using federal 50gr hollowpoints. These rounds drop fast past 100yds but man do they lay the law down. Killed those dogs with 1 round per and the average range was about 110yds using a Johnny Stewart rabbit call. There are better cals out there for sure but the farmer only let me shoot there BECAUSE I was shooting with a .22mag. The ol mag is better in the wind than the .17 anyday, for obvious reasons.

I heard the .22 mag...... .and read many times.... that it is very challenged by the wind.

I feel that my .17 HMR just isn't quite enough to be an ideal coyote round. It does the job, but marginally at best. I personally wouldn't use the .17 HMR in this case. I've only used .22 mag on gophers before, but the guys I know who have shot coyotes with it say the heavier grain weight is an advantage over the .17? How do you guys feel about this? Is this true?
