Default Bino review - dissertation by a prof in Astro physics

This guy writes an interesting article about his perceptions of low, mid-range and high end binos. He is a prof in Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics, so one has to give him at least a bit of credibility.

Long and short of it? Avoid the chinese cheap chit, and in most cases, your overpaying for the high end... mid-range is often just as good.

Article here.

I think this generally applies to almost everything. In my case binoculars are a waste of half the money as I'm legally blind in one eye. Just the other day I bought myself a monocular...works great and half the cost.

Once you get to a certain point, you do pay a lot more to gain that last bit of performance. But if you insist on having that last bit of performance, it will cost you.

I find Opticstalk to a good resource for information on optics.

Education doesn't mean unbiased. He argues in favor of wide angle and porro models!

See Wisdom No. 10. Lot of good points there and you have to judge the whole argument he makes. No doubt, you can buy better binoculars for less money than in the past . I don't agree with the 8x 40 bit and I prefer roof prisms cause they're less bulky.
