I just found out about them, and how big the problem with them is. They are now on my "Things To Do" weekend list. I'd check them out pretty closely for parasites before eating them, though.

Must be the latest flurry in the media, bringing the potential Pig hunters out. What I heard on the radio yesterday was that there are about 1500 loose in the province and based on experience in manitoba and Saskatchewan, they believe eradication is impossible. I got my official letter from the County the other day, advising that I was living within a 10 km. radius of sightings, and what to do about it. Good thing nobody ever saw a commercial opportunity in rats.

I found this part interesting:
Quote:
[Mr. Hagman] said people who want to hunt his boar without paying have cut his fences four times in an unsuccessful attempt to lure his animals away.

Hmmmm... Who knows, it might be some do-gooder hoping to "free Wilbur"...

No need to cut fences, these things could tunnel their way out of a German prisoner of war camp. The guys that lost these pigs, are now looking stupid and have to come up with excuses. My own feeling is we should shut the places down and hold the owners responsible for any losses.

Very tasty. Not at all like pork. I have shot (and eaten) them in Europe, Poland to be specific.

don't spare a one
everyone thinks hogs are great until you have to live with them. 1500 will be 10k in a year then 70k so on and so on. these things tear up everything, are extremely intelligent, prey on fawns and reproduce like mad. unless your winters can keep em in check your in trouble... best control is by taking everyone you see, year round and taking the youngest will yield better results over the long haul.

you must have never hunted these wild boar ..they come from russia so our winter mean nothing to they they survive very well here..
and as for shooting every one you see,, chances are most will never see one as they are very elusive ..
and saying there will be 10k in a year is wrong there has be boar running loose for atleast the last 20 years .we take usally 3 a year and the poulation stays pretty stable ..i do know that 15 years ago a boar farmer by carrot creek went broke a realesed over 500 of them and they are still around preadators and farmers have kept them in check ..the press releases this story every couple of years and causes a huge problem for the county offices and farmers which most farmer have never seen one either .occasoally one sees them in the winter on grain piles other then that nothing .. but if u want to try, the best way is to bait them in with old potatos they cant resist them..

So out of those who have actually seen them, where abouts would you suggest to go? A few of us would love to try and get a couple.

I hate to rain on the parade folks !!!!.....but here come the storm. lol
The interest in these "wild" pigs continues to amaze me . If i were you folks i would save my gas money......I will bet you my last dime that none of you will see a pig let alone kill one. lol. The numbers of ferral pigs in AB sounds inflated to me. Dont get me wrong, i know they exist, but i think the "herds" are very localized. Some claim to have killed them, but i believe %99 have done so by coincidence. The last thing farmers need are a bunch of "pig hunters" knocking on their doors chasing a perverbial ghost. These threads are all the same: RE: "i heard their are ferral pigs in AB....where can i go to kill one". I find it comical .....anyways, sorry if i ruffle a few feathers! Just a quick little vent on the topic from me.
BTW, good luck to all the "pig hunters" who decide to ignore my post and go anyways .

done a bunch of pig hunting have you?
No offence but you must be one of those guys who go more for the kill than then to get out and hunt which is fine but no need to get condescending about it
I don't go looking for boars but if I hear of some from a landowner or friend I'll always give it a shot, it's just fun to get out and about.

High demand
I e-mailed a government official about the boar problem. He responded the next day and basically the MD's that have boar problems have been "inundated with calls from perspective hunters". Looks like the demand might outweigh the supply.

Sorry for the condescending tone......and im sorry that my outdoor tastes dont include pig hunting. If you are as dedicated as you sound, i wish you the best of luck in your future pig hunts. Is that condescending enough for you?......a bit curious though, what has lead you to believe that i "go more for the kill".

It's not about having a taste for Pig hunting, it's about eradicating a pest that can cause us a great deal of grief in our other hunting pursuits, another problem laid on us by Government shortsightedness. The problem lies in the enthusiasm of those who want to do the job. Nothing wrong with that, but, especially after Lac St. Anne, it scares other Counties and landowners. Mountainview decided against a bounty, specifically because of problems elsewhere.

If you say you don't think it's worth the time or money to try for them because the chances are slim getting one, it would lead me to believe that you would put more emphasis on the kill rather than just getting out. I'm not a "dedicated" pig hunter but I like I said - if I hear of some I'll go giver a shot. For me any excuse to get out is great, even a ghostly pig. If I'm reading you wrong, sorry, but that's what I got out of it. The point of my post wasn't to critique your hunting tastes, but to respond to your critique of mine.
I take it you don't sheep hunt either?

Sorry Shrubs im not usually such a jack *****...lol. If you guys want to chase hogs around then be my guest. Its just not for me. When i think about all this publicity that these ferral pigs get it makes me shudder. I picture truck loads of rednecks crusing around pig "hot spots" itching to pull the trigger.
I havent sheep hunted yet, but me and Nube have a date next year .
