Post Knife sharpener for the field ?

hey everyone , well all know what its like to be in the field for hours and finally get your chance to take down that monster animal that you have been stalking for day's and now the work starts and for some reason more often then not we find ourselves field dressing our newly taken game shortly after legal shooting time or while it has already gotten dark and as it seems one can never take to many knives or find the right knife thats seems to never go dull. But i think i can speak for alot of fellow hunters when you get half way through skinning your game and you wish your knife had a little bit of edge left on it just to finish off in a timely manner. So that being said I'm reaching out to all fellow hunters that can relate to this and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction for a good reliable hand held knife sharpener thats field friendly a guy could use touch up his knife to finish off his skinning duties.

For sheep hunting I took a diamond stone that I got from wholesale sports. Can't remember who made the product but it was about $6. It's kinda the shape of one of those wide Popsicle sticks doctors use. Best thing is, it weighs basically nothing and is easy to pack. It's thin plastic handle with the diamond stone on the end about 1 1/2" long.

Default Princess Auto Diamond Lap

Princess Auto sells a two sided diamond lap, or strop, one side fine, one side course. It folds up into its handle (butterfly knife style) and is very effective, small, and light.

I just prefer to have a couple of knives. I carry a quality fixed blade and have 2 Gerber lock blades if I need them.

i picked up a sharpener from canadaian tire for 10 bucks last weekend, not sure of the name but it said as seen on tv on the package, it was a last minute thing, thought i was wasting my money, but i can say this thing works like a hot damn, 3 or 4 swipes and the knife is razor sharp, best ten bucks i have ever spent

x2...a couple of knives is a must for me as well. I carry more knifes in my truck when I am out hunting. Otherwise I use Lansky and a Leather Strop at home.

Bottom side of a ceramic coffee cup. Just like Billy Dee says, "works every time".

You beat me to it by 5 minutes... it is the only thing that touches my knives at home, and they are as sharp as can be.

Do they make a bad F.Dick steel? If so, how do you tell a good one from bad one? Where can buy them (I've seen them online, but the shipping costs tend to be stupid)?

I just carry a small piece of precharged leather. Works well for the convex edges I prefer.

Default Knife sharpener

I bought a ceramic steel at home hardware. It fell off the butcher table and broke off a 3" piece of the end now I carry that piece in the field and it works great. Any of the diamond style work well also.

Buy a APA bow they have a great knife sharpener built right into the riser, and they work great.

I have one of these Smiths units:
http://www.smithsproducts.com/produc...sp?id=46&cid=4

It's light and the tapered diamond rod is good for serrated blades.

It may sound silly but after many, many, many years in the field and having to deal with dull knives, I've found a simple little utility knife with extra blades is worth its weight in gold. Canadian Tire always has a sale on these and I buy and throw them in packs, glove boxes just to have a few laying around.

Work great if you want to cape out in the field. I use the "real" knife for all initial cuts.

I have been dealing with this for years and this is what I have finally come up with to keep a razors edge on my knives while skinning game.

Don't wait for the blade to get dull touch up the blade now and then as your working.

You will be amazed at how fast and easy this unit works I even touch up my wife's kitchen knifes with it.

I am buying a few more to keep in different packs/places so I always have one near.

Like others said, I carry two fixed blade knives for skinning. I also have a small diamond sharpener. It's silver and is literally the size of a pen. The sharpening bit slides out of the body of it and it's super light and only a few inches long.

it does a great job sharpening if something needs a touch up in the field.

Last Xmas I was given a folding lockblade steel by ChestnutTools. I am very impressed with it.

I always have, an E Z Lap diamond sharpener, on my belt. This year I am using, a Havalon Piranta, with exchangable blades. both setups, work very well.
