Default Upland Slam

So we have the dogs

which we are so excited about. Echo and Dook are great dogs.

We have decided to hunt and hopefully try to get all the magor game bird species in Alberta:

Huns
Sharptails
Phesant
Ruffies
Spruce Grouse
White Tail Ptarmigan
Dusky (Blue) Grouse

We have lots of access for Sharpies,Huns, Ruffies and phesant. We would love any pointers on Spruce, Blue and Ptarmigan.

Also if anyone is interested in joining us on a hunt or two, we would love the company.

Thanks

Michael and Michelle

Used to be ptarmigan and blues on powder-face ridge in the elbow valley southwest of Calgary, talking 20 years ago now.Don't see why there shouldn't be some there now though.

Its a steep hike up there so be ready for it.

This is the kind of hunting I have always wanted to do. My only worry is that I know there area lot of no hunting zones in K-Country and can't seem to get a straight answer out of F&W as to where the banned areas are. Is there any maps of this area showing where I can go??

I would love to come along in September for a bird hunt. I like the idea of hitting Powderface for ptarmigan. That corridor isn't part of the provincial park and a F&W officer I talked to out there last week when I was sighting in my rifle said that it is OK to hunt in there.

I see both dogs are equipped with night vision. Unfortuantely there is no hunting for upland birds at night in Alberta.

Get some good hiking boots . The blues and Ptarmigan will require some climbing. I like the idea of a bird slam, best of luck on success.

I would be interested in trying for some Blues and Ptarmigan this season. I also have a pointy dog. Have some other ideas for where to find Blues as well.

Going to be a good year, saw lots of young birds and then this hen hiding a fresh set of 5 chicks under her. One is peeking out from the back end.

I hike that area a lot I've only seen spruce grouse. I have seen ruffed but they are much lower down around the flats.

I'm really excited to see others talking about finding some blues and especially ptarmigan in k-country, I've spotted a couple areas there that seemed great for these birds and I've found they are areas I can hunt. The only thing holding me back was other people telling me I was crazy to think ptarmigan were in the area. I'm going for sure now and I'll let you know if I find any. Good luck everybody!

Smile The dogs?

Is it a pudelpointer and a small munsterlander?

I just need to know. The gender would be helpful too.

Thanx

Bob

Bob, both are GWP's. The larger one is an 18 month old male, the little one is a 6 month old female.

Always did well on Blue Grouse in the Porcupine Hills. Shot a few Spruce there as well.

Did see some grouse up west of Turner Valley. Some inside the wildland park but more outside it. Saw them right off the trails on horseback, this year going to start packing the shotgun on all our rides out there.

I'm always in if you are looking for company but I'm sure your inboxes are full after 5 minutes of posting that.
