RDR flies

Anyone know what works well on the RDR. Keep in mind I am very new to this so any help would be great!!!

Goldeye/Mooneye:Bright flies work best with an unnatural presentation, Hoppers, Woolly buggers
Walleye/Pike:Clousers,Rabbit Strip Leechs,Woolly Buggers.
Brown trout/Whitefish:Whatever is hatching. Rockys will eat small dries off the surface but key in on nymphs most of the time.
Burbot:Iv only caught the guys out of the storm drainages with a dead drift bunny leech right beside it.

Nymphs would not be a dry fly, correct?

when i fly on the rdr i use anything orange .. tons of goldeye .. dont know the name of em but they at canadian tire ... look 4 the orange or yellow is good to ..good luck dont hook ur self on the back cast

nymphs are a subsurface fly that should be bouncing along the bottom in a drag free drift. If all your fishing is goldeye bring some floating line and big foam flies in yellow,orange, and green. Just strip it in through the current or let it swing and you should be fine

Thanks hunter. I would love to land more then Goldeye but I am just starting with the FlyFishing, I figured dry was where everyone starts.

You want to target them in the slow shallow water or in the foam lines.
Just before dark and an hour before is prime time for the goldeye/mooneye.
The city section has a ton of goldeye in there. If your not getting any rises switch over to a woolly bugger and just swing it

ye olde bead head wooly bugger will drag up trout,pike , walleye above the city. in a few weeks be on the lookout for the large mayfly hatch (brown drake) some where between now and the end of the month. if you get the right day, even the walleye will respond to dry fly. tight lines, hope that helps.

I like useing Bead Head prince Nymphs. they resemble a few diffrent nymphs in RDR. Its my go to pattern when targeting whites or goldeye.

Went to the sportsmen den this afternoon, they didn't have any yellow or orange Wooly Buggers. But the young gentlemen did hook me up with something he said the goldeye would hit. Any other Fly shops in the Greater Red Deer area?

I am only using the spinfishing method of chucking flies (All Ickly Flyworks BTW) and have had really good luck with Caddis patterns on the RDR. Color seems to vary by time of day and weather but this has been the most effective pattern for me.

Yup droppers and all. I even tried some dries on MOnday night @ a local stocked pond mimicking a mosquito and was catching fish when noone else was...lol

takes the whole learning curve right out of the equation, however it is not without issues. doesnt work well for spooky fish like whites unless you use a rig like this...

and then casting distance is affected. Overall works great for me! caught everything from whites to browns and pike using this setup.
