Garmin Navionics

Anyone using Garmin Navionics on Crawling Valley or Little Bow Resiviour? If so what are your thoughts? I currently use a Humminbird Helix 7 and I am thinking of switching to a Garmin fish finder and Trolling motor.

I like the idea of being able to set a trolling parameter to troll a specific depth based on a map.

They are junk. Ancient maps and good for basic reference only. For good ones make your own.

Agreed. Sometimes I actually find there is some accuracy but that is the exception. Used Navionics on Fawcett this past winter and it was so far off it was like I loaded the wrong lake.

You are correct junk, GPS City Calgary was far less than helpful.

Does your Helix not have Autochart? If it does just buy a Minn Kota trolling motor with I pilot link and you should be good to go after doing some mapping. Personally I prefer the mapping on my Helix 7 to the mapping on my Garmin but they are both good...

I had a Navionics card come with my Lowrance and I removed it and started doing my own mapping after the first hour or using it. Those cards are absolute garbage for around here. Start making your own, or if you go to a Lowrance unit, the lake may already be mapped and ready for download on the C-Map site.

I had the Minn Kota Ulterra and hated it. I would not buy another. Had it lock up and not retract a couple times and literally had to remove it from the bracket to get my boat off the water. Maybe the terrova might be better.


The new Kracken system from Garmin seems pretty impressive. So I thought I would see what guys think of the Garmin Fish finders.

Get a garmin....sign up for active captain....use real mapping.
Both of those reservoirs are well mapped already.

I can’t speak for Alberta but Garmins relief shading here in the ocean is a game changer. Most of the ocean isn’t high definition but if it’s topography in the ground you can see it on the sounder.

When I paid for it and overlaid all of my marks against it, every rock, hole, cliff or reef was exactly where it was supposed to be.

I had similar issues. Mine was caused from dust on components of the deployment system after driving a few times over gravel roads. Thanks to you tube for an easy fix. I wouldn’t give up my ulterra for anything. Just have to find a cheap way to eliminate the dust or stay off gravel.

Can't speak to either of those trolling motors, as I have a powerdrive on my boat but its been good to me. As for the Garmin fishfinders I love mine as far as the sonar goes, what I don't like about the mapping is that when you're turning the little boat on the screen that tells you where you're going doesn't seem to respond as fast as my Helix does. More of an annoyance then anything, but the maps are great once you make them.
