Default Moose hunting in WMU 339 (Archery Season)

Hi guys,

a work colleague asked me if I would go with him to WMU 339 (Brazeau Dam area) for moose hunting. Apparently he can buy a moose tag without a draw for that WMU. I have no idea if that works and I didn't check it, since he asked me if I could accompany him with my big bore rifle for predator protection. Does anybody have an idea how the moose population in that are is? I have read already in this forum that this particular WMU is a bit overloaded with wolves and bears, but that was in an older post and I am not sure if that is still up to date.

I would appreciate some helpful information, since this forum seems like a place with tons of experienced people.

Have a good day, guys!

If ur carrying a rifle, may as well get a bear tag, it's open.
Can't help us with any other area info tho.
Good luck.

I have a buddy who hunts out there with a group of guys every year at the end of September. I think in the past 6 years that I've known him, they have only killed one bull. I'm not sure exactly what part of the wmu? I have hunted there a scattered time myself, and I hardly see any game other than whitetail does. And ruffed grouse.

That being said, I haven't gone too far off the main roads. And stayed on the east side of the wmu. If you put in the work, you could have some luck! As for predators, I've heard the same as you, littered with Wolves, bears and most likely Cougars too? But who knows? Good luck if you do go along. Post some pics of the hunt, whether successful or not!

And there's a lot more bears there than there is moose if that says anything.

I've hunted this zone and worked in it daily for many years. In the past 6 years I have only had a chance at one moose. It didn't pan out well for me. In the past 3 years I have not had any sightings of moose. But if you look hard enough you might get lucky.

And yes, lots of bears, wolves and cats. We did our best to hammer the wolves last year, and between a few of us we got 10 wolves. After the snow flies we will see how many are around this year.

339 gets hunted for moose and elk year round. Yes, lots of wolves and tons of hunters when rifle season opens up.

Get off the road and by the rivers and you could have some luck.

It is a crap shoot as to where they are going to be. Good advice, do a map recce of the roads trails, cut lines creeks and rivers. Do not discredit new or newer cut blocks.
Focus on a area if there is no sign move on. I found the southern area along the Brazaeu river best area to find moose. Again through you have toput the miles on to find sign.

The moose are there. But it will be a bit of scouting They seem to move lots.

Good luck lets us know what you see.

Default no animals left in brazeau area

Just spent 7 days with 3 guys hunting for moose and mule deer in 429. waited 10 years for moose draw, used to see lots of moose and mule deer in the 90s and 80s. As a group, saw one cow moose, one calf and one bull. no mule deer at all and maybe 20 whitetails. very few tracks, everything is logged out, clear cuts as far as the eye can see. Where has all the game gone? People say Natives ? disease, over-logging, you tell me...

I hunt that area quite often, Never seen Mulies there, had one crack at a nice bull elk two years ago but My arrow went right over his back... Decent amount of white tails here and there, especially early season until they get spooked. One of my favourite spots I've have had the same bull moose trick me every time I go in there thinking it's an elk until he walks out. Just don't have a tag for him ! Ha ha. And yes like you said lots of new logging going on in there.

Cheers

The 80's & 90's were different than now and weren't as good as the the 60's & 70's. The "good ole days" are now ! .. 'cause it's not gonna get any better, sorry to say.
