Default bolt knob cover removal

I bought a very nice Swedish M96 sporter in 6.5x55 for my daughter. Its a surprise for her (she's 12) and I plan to add a leupold vx2 1x4 20mm that is sitting in the safe. The only thing I'm not happy with on the rifle is the lacrosse- ball-sized bolt knob cover someone put on it. It does make the bolt operation more positive but its HUGE.

the question I have: How would you suggest removing it? It appears cemented on and I don't want to damage the bolt handle. It's made of some kind of plastic.

I have a few ideas but I thought I would reach out to the group for some suggestions.

Freaking weird.
Go gentle with a zip disc on the Dremel, or maybe take a heat gun or torch to it.

Maybe try warming it up with a butane torch and unscrewing it first?

Big set of channel locks with a Leather pad on the bolt knob. I have removed a few, most are threaded onto the arm but I have seen some that are just a real tight fit over the original bolt knob. Turn it to the left and you will be able to tell pretty quick which version you have.

Looks like a tourbon ball. They are rubber and just on....some fit quite tight. Perhaps the previous owner permanently fixed it on??

Glad that worked out. Surprising how many of the old Mausers have those plastic knobs added to them. Must have been a real craze at some point in time.

Thanks for letting us know.

Default Thanks everybody

I’m glad to be rid if the clown nose. It reminded me of control lever on on a tractor. I appreciate the help and I will post the pic of the completed project.
