Default Lakers, Lakers and more Lakers!

What an outing on Cold Lake yesterday.
Calm waters, clear skies and a slight breeze bonus was hungry lakers.
8hrs in the kayaks and 20.4km’s covered trolling.
Left many areas that were on fire just to find more larger active fish and got a 32 incher towards the end of the day which was fun.
The majority of the lakers were 20-25 inches and they were on fire in spurts.
Tight lines and enjoy the long wk-end!!!

Lunch break

Sleep did come easy!

Until the next adventure, tight lines!

Nice job! That last one’s a looker!
We got a few this morning before lunch jigging but nothing trolling. Lots of chasing but not as many strikes.
Might need some tips from you!

Again we found bait balls stacked up on good structure where the drop went from 50-130 fow in short order.

Mark them and then troll a figure eight pattern through the bait ball in and around that area.

Or sit on top of the bait ball and jig above, below and right in the middle of them plus I have found more than often just staying outside of the bait ball cluster produces results.

Be prepared to change your presentation out too. Colours, size speed of the chase etc

Once you dial that in it’s gravy.

Ohh sometimes I find fish that are inactive I just move and often find not too far away lakers that are on fire.

Good luck

Remember two 20’s make a 40….lol

We stayed (tent) at the provincial park, last weekend, despite the poor weather we had a nice window on Sunday afternoon and got out in kayaks for a few hours, fishing was slow, but i picked up a very nice laker, in the shallow edges of the drop off. west side of the camp site , a a few pike, in the boat launch bay,
A very impressive thunder storm that night, roughed up lake, glad i put up a big tarp.
Wish the weather had been better ,a very nice area, hope to be back.
And 58 cat, thanks for you threads on cold lake,

Nice fish, how do the pink ladies work. Do you need a heavy line?

Pink Ladies, dipsy divers and deep six all Work fine.
I moved to the deep six #2, willow leaf attached directly and four feet behind I run an apex trolling lure.
The deep six #2 can get me down to 70fow with about 100 feet of line out and if I want to run shallower I just don’t put out as much line.
For line I run suffix 832 braid 20lbs.

I have never used the weighted line
So maybe someone can chime in if they use it.

Hope this helps.

Try using lead jigs. 1/3 ounce to 3/4 ounce with white bucktail with a red throat and some flash. I used them on lakers in B.C. and the jigs killed the lakers. They can be retrieved or jiged straight up and down.

Great point, I use them for ice fishing just to change things up from tubes and spoons. Myself personally when it comes to summer time I will jig but mostly when I find an active bunch of lakers around a bait ball and I need a sammich, pee, and a bevy.
Mostly troll around in the summer.

Lakers are takers and have been known to eat just about anything which is a good thing for us not so gifted anglers

22 c today was the surface temp .

We managed around 3I0 landed but who was counting ?

Stupid crazy out in around 130 fow finding suspended lakers

Most bait balls had smalls around them but nothing big but still fun!

Super dark laker!

Sons first kayak laker!
Think he is hooked but he likes the mountains and fly fishing.
Can’t blame him for that!

Mom wants her boat back.

Such nice markings on this laker.

Over 20km’s covered and 8hrs later, around 30 lakers landed, kinda gave up on the real count due to well I can’t count well past 20

No wind, smokey, humid but the sun was blocked out or we would have cooked out there today.

Had a great visit with a fish and game officer leaving the lake. So good to see them out and about.

I don't post many pictures in the summer. But its a laker thread...the only species I've fished for (all of three times so far) this open water season. So here's my contribution from last Saturday. 35" and 18.9lbs...a fatty.

We braved the smoke Saturday and put a bunch in the boat. Feel sorry for all the people expecting to watch the planes but at least the fishing was great. My oldest daughter wasn't feeling too good from the heat on Friday but she toughed it out and actually was outfishing us most of the day.

Another great family outing!
Smoked fish was the bonus flavour of the day for this neck of the woods over the last few days.

Well an awesome morning in the yak.
Landed 9 smediums, lost 4 at the yak and had a bazillion strikes.
Buggers were striking the willow leaf spoons I believe sometimes hard enough to trigger the deep 6 to a neutral position so I adjusted the screw tighter, problem solved.
I got bored catching and wanted bigger so off I went but found nothing so went back to the original area to wrap up the outing on a positive.
Maybe the bite was crazy because we had a huge storm roll in last night but I ain’t complaining.

The beast at the end of a productive outing!

Every bite feels like this fella is on the end of my line.

But reality kicks in and another smedium was all that hit my lure.

Great calm sunny day and the fish were cooperating, gotta luv it!
