Winter Kill?
With all this snow, is anyone else thinking about subsidizing feed to their local wildlife population?
I recently sold off my horse herd and still have a bunch of squares up in my loft, strongly thinking about loading up sled and taking bales out for my deer herd.

Be aware that too rich of feed after them being on slim pickings can do more harm than good.
Also be prepared to see things through to green up once you start suplimental feeding.
Once they find your hay, they have a tendancy to become so dependant on it, that switching to lousy old browse is tough on them.
Then theres the issue with their travel path being handy pickings for predators.
Great thought, seeing as you have the resources handy, but it doesn't come without some issues all it's own.

Ya those issues are what's holding me back, seeing it thru until there's visible feed on the ground is not a problem, I have snared over half the coyotes out of the area so far, I never thought about the richness of my hay. But seeing it is over a year old, and wasn't top notch hay to begin with I can't see it being a problem. I'm far enough away from major CWD area. I have a few horn traps in the area already, so it would not be too much trouble to get a few more pounds of feed out on maitanance trips.
I don't know... Sure wish I would have planted all that winter corn I was planning on putting out last spring.

Starvation is secondary to yotes IMO. Once the cold comes back there's going to be a firm crust of snow for the yotes to run on top of making deer easier pickins for them. The only solution is to put as big a dent into the yote population as possible, which I know you're doing Joe.

Was up visiting a buddy for New Years Eve in the Athabasca area. We drove over to another friends at Baptiste with the wives and his newborn. On the short 30min drive home we seen several deer, a moose and a coyote. Was really concerning seeing how difficult a time the deer were having in the deep snow. One little buck looked exhausted as he came out of the ditch and crossed the road.
Starting to get concerned next November may be slim pickings. I'll have to do my part and load up some varmit rounds for the .243 and help control the predator population where I hunt.

I've been putting bales out since December 1. It's cold, and the snow is deep. Plus, where I'm feeding em, is keeping em away from the highways, less accidents, less deer killed. I don't worry about them getting dependent on my feed. They take off to the bushes or the river bottoms come spring. I have yet to see them come back in the spring for me to feed em.

Don't listen to the nay Sayers, if you can feed then do it feed them, do it as long as you can, the alternative is not very Rosie.

Everything that has to do with wild life it is up to us the hunters to protect or not cause we know first hand what's going on out there.
