I have never operated a till, if that is what it is called.
One.
It's a large grocery store.
Two.
A large grocery store would have tills.
Three.
The cashier scans items for the price, that's what they do in large grocery stores.
Four.
The price shows up digitally on a led screen ($15).
Five.
The cashier tells you the price verbally.
Six.
You give the cashier paper or plastic ($20).
Seven.
If you give paper (cash) the cashier makes an input for the amount of cash given ($20).
Eight.
The till automatically does the ciphering (20-15=5).
Nine. The cashier gives you $5 back. They don't have to understand anything but they must be able to read numbers.
Having said all ^^^^. I don't understand how a cashier could not "figure it out". There is nothing to figure out.
I think there is more or less to this than you provide. Like maybe she is just surprised that someone actually pays in cash and makes a dramatic moment of it?
