After reading this, I decided to pass. Looks like they didn’t fix the “marlin jam” issue in the 95

It is interesting I have had 4 marlins in my time. Jm GG in 444, Jm 336 in 30-30, a remlin 1895 22" and a reminder dark both in 45-70.. and numerous friends have marlins of various ages/ calibers.. I have never experienced a marlin jam...nor have any of my friends....I know they do happen. But it seems like something that plagues only certain guns??? I have three close shooting buddies with new Ruger SBLs none of them have had a hiccup...but then guys like Ford experience issues that would very much put enough doubt in my mind that I couldn't trust my life to it in a real bad situation with a big bear.... my dark however has had over 1k rounds through it and never even a stumble. As for the new trapper...if you want one get one..run it hard and cross your fingers that you don't get one of the lemons that jam....always remember to run the lever hard though...don't baby them.

The 3rd guy hasn’t had any issues but replaced his extractor as a precaution. I will send it back to ruger until they start charging me then like a vehicle I’ll find someone local that knows what they’re doing to work on it and start replacing parts with Wild West or Ranger point precision. Sucks!

This post, from a guy that does big bear encounters for a living, pretty much ended my desire for one. It’s not just him either, it’s all over the Marlin forum.

Still love Marlin levers. Have owned 3. Fairly sure my RM was a lemon. Replaced the carrier twice under warranty and I sent it down the road 2 weeks ago. Gunna replace it with an A300 Ultima patrol. I’d pick up a JM 45/70 in the future if one came my way but a hard no on the RM ones for this guys intended purpose. Gun ran fine with 300gr low recoil but you out full power loads in and it was not happy!

Marlin 336
I've had mine for 35 years. It's a 1975 model 30-30. Bought it used in 1989. Neve had a hiccup, not a jam, not a feed or extract issue, nothing. I have shot deer and bears with it, coyotes and pigs. Come to think of it probably have not ran a bore brush through it, sheesh I can't remember when. I use it when I'm bush hunting, or under 150 yard shots. I never think of it, I pull the trigger and it has always gone bang. I guess they were made better back then.

The marlin jam is a timing problem usually caused by wear. Most people who talk about the marlin jam don't actually know what it is. I have old Marlins, and have experienced jams from a few different causes but never had the marlin jam

I’ve had one for a little over a year and it’s been flawless. I love it

You mean improperly machined or improperly hardened parts. That’s why some jam out of the box, some after a few rounds, and some don’t for decades.
The reality is the 1895 is a very sensitive design that does not tolerate inconsistent QC and that remains a problem despite the new ownership. Now we all know anything mechanical can fail, but for a gun made for the specific purpose of dangerous animal encounters, the current failure rate is unacceptable.

I have a 1957 336 in 35 rem and have not had any issues. I’d have no issues carrying it for black bears or lions with 220gr buffalo bores. Not sure I’d carry it for griz but it’s better than a pistol!!

Have 2 newer Marlin 1895’s in 45-70. Both are junk. One shoots 16” low at 50 yards. The other has barrel screwed on crooked. Plainly visible. Marlin won’t do anything. 🤬. Never another marlin.

You are correct but I'm not sure why you quoted my post

I have an old Marlin Guide Gun, no issues. New Ruger Marlin Trapper, no issues. I have read about the issues before but never experienced them. I've also read that the Rossi 95 rifles are pretty darn good rifles for less money. I've handled them but have not bought one yet. At some point I will put one through the paces.

My experience with Marlins is the problem can occur but is very rare and it is an easy fix.
Definitely not deterrent for owning one.
